TouchMath: Multisensory Mathematics

TouchMath is a multi-sensory program that uses its signature TouchPoints to engage students of all skills and learning styles.

TouchMath has been proven to raise math test scores in classrooms around the world for more than three decades.

TouchPoints
The TouchMath secret is simple. In fact, it can be summed up in one word: TouchPoints.

Every number from 1 to 9 has TouchPoints corresponding to the value of the digit:

  • Numbers 1 to 5 have single TouchPoints.
  • Numbers 6 to 9 have double TouchPoints.

When students count TouchPoints, they associate digits with actual values. They learn that a digit like 2 isn’t just a page swirl. They learn it represents a quantity such as two apples, two ladybugs, two buttons, or two TouchPoints.

Using picture objects and TouchPoints, we teach young children to associate numbers with real values.

Patterns of Touching and Counting

Students count aloud by touching single TouchPoints once and double TouchPoints twice. This multisensory approach engages students on the auditory, visual and tactile levels, as well as kinesthetic.

To ensure students get to the correct answer, it is important that they touch the TouchPoints in the correct touching and counting pattern for each digit.

Counting is the Key

Calculations are easier using TouchMath as all basic operations are counting. In TouchMath, students count ahead. They count backwards when subtracting. They count in sequences in multiplication and division. Students touch, count, and repeat each problem and respond aloud to reinforce mastery of the facts.
