What to know before you apply.
We believe in complete transparency—here are answers to the questions we hear most from prospective tutors.
How much do JTT tutors earn?
Answer: Tutors are paid hourly. Rates are competitive and based on experience, training, and the needs of the student.
Can I choose my availability?
Answer: Yes! You determine the days and times you are available, and we'll match you with students that fit.
Is this a 1099 position?
Answer: Yes. JTT tutors are independent contractors. You set your schedule and we match you with students based on your availability and expertise.
What qualifications are important?
Answer: We look for educators with teaching experience, a passion for students, strong communication skills, and a commitment to ongoing growth.
Do I need training in specific reading programs?
Answer: Specialized training is a plus! Experience with Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Fundations, Lindamood-Bell, UFLI, Heggerty, or Science of Reading is often requested by families.
Virtual, in-person, or both?
Answer: We offer both virtual and in-person tutoring. Opportunities are based on student needs and your preferences.
What types of students will I work with?
Answer: Students with dyslexia, learning differences, executive functioning challenges, and those needing support in reading, writing and math.
What if there isn't an immediate student match?
Answer: Once you complete the hiring process and are fully cleared, we'll reach out when a student opportunity that fits your skills and schedule becomes available.
What might make JTT not a good fit for me?
Answer: JTT may not be the right fit if you're looking for guaranteed full-time hours, prefer a traditional classroom environment, or aren't comfortable providing individualized instruction and maintaining communication and documentation.
What support will I receive?
Answer: You'll have access to resources, training, and ongoing support from our team so you can feel confident and successful with your students.
How quickly will I hear back?
Answer: Lauren personally reviews every application. Qualified candidates can expect to hear from her within 3–5 business days.
What happens after I apply?
Answer: If your experience aligns with what we're looking for, Lauren will contact you to begin our 3-step hiring process (application review, interview, and onboarding).
