Recent research has shed interesting light on an old technique to help students with learning to read. You might remember a time when TV commercials featuring children shouting “Hooked On Phonics Worked for Me!”

The popularity of phonics has waxed and waned over the years but now researchers are beginning to look at phonics, in combination with other methods, again.

Phonics were a major part of reading instruction for many years, helping students to “sound out” words based on the sounds, or phonics, each letter or group of letters make.
